When the only tool you have is a hammer, all problems begin to resemble nails” (Abraham Maslow). How might this apply to ways of knowing, as tools, in the pursuit of knowledge?

List of key words including explanation on how you interpret/ define them.

Tool: Something that acts like a device or is a device that is used to do something. E.g. Cell phones and laptops are tools for communication.

Ways of knowing: Emotion (5 senses +), Language, Reason, and Sense Perception

Complete the following sentence, answering the TOK Essay title (this is your Thesis statement): In this TOK Essay I will show the different ways of knowing, the different ways of perceiving things and a few in depth examples. For instance, how logic can be wrongly used (how logic can be used to fool people) around the world.

Paragraph 2: Here you support your thesis. Complete it: In this paragraph I will show that… Example supporting your thesis:

In this paragraph I will show that imagination is key. After the introduction, I intend to go into my first point. I may first write about a real life situation or give an example of what the topic is communicating from a scene in a TV show, art piece, movie or book. This quote reminds me of a child trying to fit a circle in a triangle in a puzzle piece – where the child is having difficult understanding that the circle cannot fit in the shape of the triangle.

Reread your thesis statement (“In this TOK Essay I….” and the essay topic. Then read your example and its explanation. Do example and explanation answer the thesis? Is there a clear link? __ yes __no

What area(s) of knowledge or way(s) of knowing are addressed in this example?
I am planning to focus on these areas of knowledge:

  • The Arts
  • Natural/ human sciences
  • History

I can possibly discuss how society’s standards limit our imagination. I’m not too sure on the order of my essay at the moment. But these are some of my ideas:

  • If we are one-minded, we can’t expect society to just agree with our opinions.
  • I can relate this topic to the Arab- Israeli conflict (connection to History.) How propaganda is used to fool the mind. Maybe people should stop and think instead of believing in the propaganda.
  • We should stop and think before we make a choice.
  • Societys’ over reliance on familiar things.
  • Some people react to all situations with the same response.
  • It takes the right tool to get the job done.

Paragraph 3: Here you support your thesis. Complete it: In this paragraph I will show that… Example supporting your thesis:

In this paragraph, I can discuss art and how we are inspired by others to create a new kind of art. With different means of transportation, tradesmen were able to bring in new ideas and products. But before this, people were creating art of their own culture. This can also connect to the culture of the Palestinians (relating back to the Arab-Israeli conflict.)

Reread your thesis statement (“In this TOK Essay I….” and the essay topic. Then read your example and its explanation. Do example and explanation answer the thesis? Is there a clear link? __ yes __no

What area(s) of knowledge or way(s) of knowing are addressed in this example?

  • The Arts
  • Natural/ human sciences
  • History

Paragraph 4: Here you support your thesis. Complete it: In this paragraph I will show that… Example supporting your thesis:

In this paragraph I will show that this quote relates to a real life situation that is common in everybody’s life. We may have similar reactions to things. For instance, if someone makes you upset, you may become aggressive or defensive.

Reread your thesis statement (“In this TOK Essay I….” and the essay topic. Then read your example and its explanation. Do example and explanation answer the thesis? Is there a clear link? __ yes __no

Paragraph 5: Conclusion – Do not introduce new ideas here. If you have new ideas, then make a separate paragraph out of it.

I will directly sum up the point of the essay title and the conclusion of my research. This is a metaphor in which the quote is indirectly communicating the writer’s idea. To me the quote is telling the world that we cannot get anywhere if we do not think outside of the box.
